Leave It Alone
As story about Pearl Townes Felder
As told by Augustus Townes, Jr.
I was the oldest Townes boy. When I was about 12 or 13 years old, I thought I was "the man." I decided that is was time for Pearl to get out of the way and let me take charge.
Pearl always watched wrestling with daddy. One day when Momma and Daddy went out to run some errands and left Pearl in charge, Peal decided to watch wrestling so all of us had to watch what she wanted to watch. I decided she was not the boss of me. It was time for me to show her who was boss.
I got up and changed the channel. Pearl changed it back and told me in her quite deadly voice, "leave it alone." She couldn't tell me what to do -- I was "the man!" So I changed the channel again and took off running. She grabbed me from behind, put me in a head choke, flipped me around, body slammed me, and threw me over her back. I landed so hard, I could barely breathe. In a small, trembling voice is said "I'm gonna tell Momma."
Later, shortly before Momma and daddy returned home, Pearl conducted her usual lineup and asked "Anybody got anything to tell?" As always, everyone said no. That's when I knew she would be the boss of me and all of us kids until she left home.
